About this position

This PhD project at Heidelberg University, titled "Myeloid Cells and Immune Regulation at the Vascular Interface," offers an exciting opportunity for early-stage researchers interested in immunology and cellular biology. Hosted by the HBIGS Heidelberg Biosciences International Graduate School within the Faculty of Biosciences, the research aims to deepen understanding of non-classical monocytes in both inflammatory and tumor-related diseases. The project focuses on the complex interactions between monocytes, other leukocytes, endothelial cells, and platelets, with a strong emphasis on immunobiology.

Methodologically, the position involves in vitro analyses of cell cultures using multicolor flow cytometry, gene expression analyses, and microscopy. Immunohistochemistry on patient samples and in vivo mouse (tumor) models are integral to the research. Additional tasks include isolation of primary leukocyte subsets, co-culture and migration experiments, and analysis of patient blood and tissue samples by multicolor flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Biology, Biochemistry, Life Sciences, or a related field. A strong background in immunology is essential, and prior experience with flow cytometry, histological and microscopic methods, biochemical techniques (such as Western blotting and gene expression analysis), cell culture, and isolation of primary cells from blood and tissue is highly desirable. Experience in animal experimentation and certification is preferred, or candidates should be willing to obtain certification. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a reliable, independent, and responsible working style, excellent teamwork and communication skills, and very good written and spoken English proficiency.

The position offers access to modern laboratory infrastructure and innovative techniques, active participation in scientific meetings and conferences, and enrollment in a structured PhD program. Comprehensive supervision and guidance are provided, ensuring a thorough introduction to necessary skills. The project is based at the University Hospital Heidelberg, Department of Dermatology, in Heidelberg, Germany.

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the HBIGS application system. The deadline for applications is July 31, 2026. For further information or questions, candidates may contact the program via email at [email protected]. Please ensure all supporting documents are uploaded to the application portal.
