About this position

Join the Centre of Excellence for Gravitational-wave Discovery (OzGrav) at Monash University for a PhD focused on cutting-edge research in gravitational-wave astronomy. As a member of Prof Eric Thrane's team, you will collaborate with leading researchers across Australia and internationally, working on projects that utilize data from the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) and other astronomical observatories.

Research topics include probing the population properties of merging binary black holes, searching for physics beyond general relativity, improving the sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors, and detecting dark matter with the Cherenkov Telescope Array. The group also incorporates data from gamma-ray burst satellites and optical surveys of flaring supermassive black holes, offering a broad and interdisciplinary approach to astrophysics.

Students will gain experience in advanced data analysis, observational techniques, and theoretical modeling, contributing to our understanding of the fate of massive stars, the formation of binary black holes, and the nature of matter at extreme densities. Collaborative projects with Prof Paul Lasky and Prof Csaba Balazs further expand the scope to include detector technology and dark matter searches.

Applicants should have a strong background in physics, astronomy, or a closely related discipline, with excellent analytical and quantitative skills. Experience in programming, data analysis, or observational astronomy is highly valued. English language proficiency is required for non-native speakers.
