About this position

The University of Duisburg-Essen invites applications for a Research Assistant (PhD) position focused on Two-Phase Flow at the Chair of Turbomachinery. Located in the heart of Germany's Ruhr Metropolitan Region, the university is recognized for its innovative research and commitment to diversity and educational justice. The Chair of Turbomachinery is a leading center for application-oriented research in turbomachinery, with expertise spanning compressors, pumps, turbines, and expanders.

This PhD opportunity centers on the development and application of advanced numerical methods for simulating two-phase flows of real gases in turbomachinery. The successful candidate will implement, validate, and continuously optimize these methods within existing simulation tools, contributing to both experimental and computational research. The position also involves writing and submitting research articles to scientific journals, presenting findings at international conferences, and participating in the supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s theses.

Key research areas at the Chair include phase transition of fluids in flows, turbomachines for alternative fluids and circuits, fluid dynamics and structural dynamics of machine components, and optimization of flow paths. The group is particularly skilled in developing numerical approaches for 2D and 3D flow calculations and in measuring flows in both stationary and rotating systems.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in engineering, with coursework in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and turbomachinery. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a keen interest in turbomachinery, possess an independent and creative working style, and be motivated to pursue a doctorate. Strong communication skills for presenting research at international venues are essential.

The position offers a full-time contract (100%) for three years, with a competitive salary according to 13 TV-L. The university provides a supportive, research-intensive environment with significant flexibility for doctoral development, comprehensive training opportunities, and family-friendly benefits such as childcare and counseling. Additional perks include excellent public transport connections, free parking, sports and health programs, and the possibility of mobile working.

The University of Duisburg-Essen is committed to promoting diversity and increasing the proportion of women among academic staff. Women with relevant qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply, and preferential consideration is given to women with equal qualifications under the State Equal Opportunities Act. Applications from severely disabled persons and those of equal status are also welcomed.

The application deadline is February 10, 2026, with the anticipated start date of April 1, 2026. Interested candidates should submit their application by email to Dr.-Ing. Sebastian Schuster ([email protected]), referencing job number 669-25. For further information about the Chair of Turbomachinery, visit http://www.uni-due.de/tm.
