About this position

George Mason University’s Mobility Observatory and Data Analytics Lab (MODAL) is recruiting one doctoral research assistant for a Ph.D. Research Assistantship beginning in Fall 2026. The position is supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and is based at George Mason University in the United States.

The project sits at the intersection of human mobility, climate stressors, disaster risk, transportation systems, and community resilience. The lab is especially interested in applicants whose research interests include travel behavior, climate impacts, risk analysis, community engagement, and mixed-methods research.

Students with experience or strong interest in data collection, focus groups, interviews, qualitative and quantitative data analysis, and community-centered research are encouraged to apply. The post emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and sustained research growth, and prior expertise in every area is not required.

Preferred preparation includes a master’s degree in geography, urban and regional planning, engineering, environmental studies, or a related field. Helpful experience includes GIS, statistical analysis, travel behavior research, climate or disaster studies, qualitative methods, or risk analysis.

To apply, interested candidates should first email [email protected] with a CV and a brief one-page Statement of Purpose describing research interests, relevant skills, and fit with MODAL. Promising applicants will then be invited to submit an official application through the George Mason University Graduate Application portal. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early contact is strongly encouraged.
