About this position

The University of South-Eastern Norway invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow position focused on improved micro-nano-structured carbons for sodium ion batteries. The successful candidate will join the Department of Microsystems at the Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences, working at the Vestfold campus. The research project, led by Associate Professor Pai Lu, aims to develop high-performance carbon anode materials and optimize the anode-electrolyte interphase to advance sodium ion battery technology. Key objectives include developing new processing protocols for converting low-cost precursors into efficient anode materials, improving specific capacity, initial Coulombic efficiency, and cycling stability, as well as optimizing the anode-electrolyte interphase through electrolyte screening and surface modification.

The appointed fellow will be affiliated with the Micro- and Nanoelectromechanical Systems research group and will participate in national and international research activities, including conferences and scholarly publications. The position is for three years and is designed to provide organized research training, including relevant courses, independent research, active engagement in research environments, dissemination, a trial lecture, and public thesis defense. The doctoral programme must be commenced within three months of starting the position.

Applicants must have a master’s degree (120 ECTS credits) or equivalent in Micro/Nanotechnology, Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Electronics, or related fields, with a strong background in electrochemistry and/or material science. A weighted average grade of B or higher is required, and candidates finishing their degree in spring 2026 may apply. Excellent English language skills are mandatory, with proficiency documented by TOEFL, IELTS, CAE/CPE, or PTE Academic unless exempt. An export license is required for the position.

The position offers a salary of NOK 550,800 per year, membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and access to insurance and loan schemes. The university provides an inclusive working environment, career guidance, and the opportunity to take Norwegian language courses. Diversity is valued, and applications are encouraged from candidates of all backgrounds.

To apply, submit your application electronically via the Jobbnorge portal, including certified diplomas, education recognition documentation (if applicable), master’s thesis, personal statement, proof of English proficiency, scholarly publications, and references. All documentation must be in Scandinavian language or English and submitted before the deadline of 1 June 2026. For further information, contact Associate Professor Pai Lu ([email protected]) or Head of Department Marius Stian Tannum ([email protected]).
