About this position

The University of Bergen invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in Mathematics, with a focus on differential geometry, at the Department of Mathematics. This position is part of the Lie-Størmer Center, funded by the Tromsø Research Foundation, and offers a fixed-term contract of 3 years, with the possibility of a 4th year dedicated to career-promoting activities such as teaching. The research project centers on Lie Theory, specifically the analysis and geometry of nonholonomic systems, with an emphasis on sub-Riemannian geometry and Cartan geometry.

The Lie-Størmer Center (LSC) explores foundational mathematical challenges at the interface of computational and pure mathematics, targeting problems relevant to the modern information society and geometric dynamical control in engineering. The successful candidate will investigate isometry groups and conformal invariants of sub-Riemannian manifolds, using tools from Cartan geometry. Participation in the National PhD-school “Mathesis” is expected, providing a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment.

Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent in mathematics, or be in the final stages of their master's program (completion required by 31.08.2026). A strong background in differential geometry is essential, and knowledge of Lie theory, sub-Riemannian geometry, or Cartan geometry is advantageous. Skills in computational mathematics are also valued. Candidates should demonstrate independence, structured work habits, collaborative skills, analytical and problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in written and oral English. The selection process will emphasize academic qualifications, fit within the research program, and motivation for pursuing a PhD in this area.

The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 568,700, with increases based on length of service, enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and access to welfare benefits. The University of Bergen is committed to diversity and inclusivity, encouraging applications from qualified candidates regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or age. Moderate gender quotas may apply if qualifications are equivalent.

Applicants must submit a comprehensive application via Jobbnorge, including a statement of research interests and motivation, detailed justification of qualifications, names and contact information for two referees (one should be the main advisor for the master's thesis), CV, transcripts, diplomas, proof of English proficiency (if required), a copy or draft of the master's thesis, relevant certificates/references, and a publication list if applicable. Certified translations into English or a Scandinavian language are required for all documents. The deadline for applications is 14th June 2026.

For further information, contact Professor Irina Markina ([email protected]) or Head of Department Antonella Zanna Munthe-Kaas ([email protected]). HR-related questions can be directed to Karoline Christiansen ([email protected]). The University of Bergen is a leading institution in Europe, recognized for high-quality research and education, and offers an exciting environment for academic and professional development.
