About this position
The University of Bergen, Faculty of Law, invites applications for a fully funded PhD Research Fellow position focused on patient control of their health data used for research and treatment purposes. This opportunity is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (ENDOTRAIN), which integrates AI, sensor technology, omics, and clinical medicine to advance digital endocrinology, with a special emphasis on adrenal disorders. The position is embedded in Work Package 4, addressing the legal and ethical aspects of AI tools in digital health.
As a PhD candidate, you will undertake an independent research project resulting in a scientific dissertation, and participate in a structured training programme at the Faculty of Law. The training includes courses in legal theory, methodological perspectives, research dissemination, and more, totaling 30 credits (one semester full-time). The research will analyze the compatibility of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) with existing and forthcoming digital regulations such as the GDPR, clarify the scope of patient control over health data, and propose amendments to EU/EEA legislation as needed. The project aims to deliver a comprehensive legal analysis of frameworks governing data-driven digital health approaches.
Secondments are planned at UniCA (1 month, ethics by design) and UULM (1 month, interoperability of ENDOTRAIN data with EHDS), providing interdisciplinary exposure. The position is affiliated with the Research Group for Information and Innovation Law, which focuses on technology, innovation, and personal data processing. The Faculty of Law at UiB is internationally recognized, with 16 research groups and 2 centers covering central legal disciplines.
Applicants must hold a master’s degree in law (Norwegian or equivalent), with the thesis submitted before the deadline and the degree awarded prior to employment. Expertise in EU/EEA law is advantageous. Candidates should be motivated for interdisciplinary and international collaboration, able to work independently and with others. For applicants educated outside Scandinavia, certified translations and a Diploma Supplement are required. English proficiency is mandatory, with transcripts in English uploaded to the application portal.
Funding is provided by the European Commission through the MSCA Doctoral Network Endotrain, offering a gross annual salary of NOK 568,700 - NOK 610,400, with potential for higher salary for exceptional candidates. Additional benefits include a mobility grant for research abroad, enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, and generous welfare provisions.
Applications must be submitted via the Jobbnorge portal, including all mandatory attachments: Application form, CV, Mobility declaration, and Motivation Letter. Eligibility rules require that applicants have not resided or carried out a main activity in Norway for more than 12 months in the past 36 months before the PhD start date, do not already hold a doctoral degree, and are eligible for doctoral studies. Diversity and inclusion are prioritized, with encouragement for women, people with immigrant backgrounds, and people with disabilities to apply.
The University of Bergen is a leading European institution, committed to high-quality research and education, and fostering sustainable and democratic development. The campus is centrally located in Bergen, Norway, and offers a vibrant academic environment for doctoral candidates.
