The University of Bergen, Faculty of Law, invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow position focused on patient control of their health data used for research and treatment purposes. This opportunity is part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network ENDOTRAIN, which integrates AI, sensor technology, omics, and clinical medicine to advance digital endocrinology, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of adrenal diseases. The position is embedded in Work Package 4, addressing the legal and ethical aspects of AI tools within the ENDOTRAIN network.

As a PhD candidate, you will conduct an independent research project resulting in a scientific dissertation, and participate in a structured training programme at the Faculty of Law. The training includes courses in legal theory, source handling, methodological perspectives in legal science, text quality, and research dissemination, totaling 30 credits (one semester full-time). The project will analyze the compatibility of the European Health Data Space (EHDS) with existing and forthcoming digital regulations such as the GDPR, clarify the scope of patient control over health data, and propose amendments to EU/EEA legislation as needed. The research will culminate in a comprehensive legal analysis of frameworks affecting digital health approaches.

Secondments are planned at UniCA (1 month, ethics by design) and UULM (1 month, interoperability of ENDOTRAIN data with EHDS), providing interdisciplinary exposure. The position offers a gross annual salary between NOK 568,700 and 610,400, with potential for higher compensation for exceptional candidates. The Faculty of Law at the University of Bergen is home to 16 research groups and 2 research centers, including the Research Group for Information and Innovation Law, which focuses on technology, innovation, and personal data processing. The faculty prioritizes research on the rule of law, international legal cooperation, climate and sustainability law, and enabling technologies.

Eligibility requirements include a master’s degree in law (or equivalent), with the thesis submitted before the application deadline and the degree awarded prior to employment. Expertise in EU/EEA law is advantageous. Applicants must demonstrate motivation for interdisciplinary and international collaboration, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. For candidates educated outside Scandinavia, certified translations and a Diploma Supplement are required. English proficiency is mandatory, with transcripts in English uploaded to the application portal. MSCA Doctoral Network rules apply: applicants must not have resided or worked in Norway for more than 12 months in the past 36 months before the PhD start date, must not already hold a doctoral degree, and must be eligible for doctoral studies.
