About this position

The Department of Sociology and Human Geography at the University of Oslo (UiO) invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow position focused on the project "NoReoffend: The Causal Impact of Norwegian Corrections on Reoffending & Reintegration." This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in the intersection of sociology, corrections, and social impact, with a particular emphasis on the effects of sentencing and correctional programs on reoffending, employment, education, and family outcomes.

The successful candidate will utilize population-wide register data and apply experimental or quasi-experimental methods to analyze the causal impact of Norwegian corrections. Applicants are encouraged to develop their own research agenda within the project’s framework, under the supervision of Principal Investigator Synøve N. Andersen. The position offers a stimulating academic environment, meaningful research contributing to society, and the opportunity to shape knowledge on corrections, reintegration, and social impact.

Requirements include a Master’s degree in Sociology or a related field, strong quantitative skills (such as regression and quasi-experimental methods), or experience in deviance research. Proficiency in English is required, with TOEFL/IELTS scores to be submitted if applicable. Applicants must also submit a 5–10 page PhD project proposal that discusses causal inference. Optional teaching duties (up to 25%) may be included.

The position is fully funded, offering a salary of NOK 551,000–594,000 per year, full-time for 3–4 years, and includes membership in Statens Pensjonskasse with excellent benefits. Additional perks include up to 1.5 hours per week of exercise during work hours. UiO values diversity and inclusion, actively encouraging applications from candidates of all backgrounds, including those with disabilities, immigrant backgrounds, or gaps in their CVs.

To apply, prepare a letter of motivation, a 5–10 page project proposal (including AI use disclosure), CV, transcripts, Master’s diploma and thesis, and 2–3 references. Submit all documents via the University of Oslo electronic recruiting system. For research-related questions, contact Principal Investigator Synøve N. Andersen. For administrative questions, contact Inger-Lise Schwab.

Application deadline: 30 April 2026. For more information and to apply, visit the official job posting.
