About this position
The University of Oslo invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in statistical population ecology, focusing on the study of correlated life-history traits, integration of diverse data sources, and assessment of environmental effects and management actions on population dynamics and viability. The position is based within BioM, an interdisciplinary Convergence Environment under UiO:Life Science, which brings together expertise from the Department of Biosciences, the Natural History Museum, the Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Philosophy. The research aims to address the accelerating decline in biodiversity by uniting ecology, statistics, and philosophy to improve modeling and governance of biodiversity under uncertainty.
The successful candidate will work with long-term capture-recapture data on fish and seabirds, including scale samples and tracking data, and may propose other relevant data sources. The project develops process-explicit, hierarchical models that capture key ecological dynamics, integrate incomplete and diverse data, and account for uncertainty in ways relevant to real-world management. The candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of biologists, statisticians, and philosophers, including another PhD student and two postdocs, and is expected to contribute to the development of holistic adaptive management systems.
Since January 2026, UiO:Life Science is part of the Centre for Global Sustainability, further expanding collaborative opportunities. Extensive fieldwork is not expected, making this position ideal for candidates interested in statistical and computational approaches to ecology. The Department of Biosciences offers a vibrant research environment in Oslo, Norway, with access to leading expertise and resources.
Applicants must hold a Master degree or equivalent in biological sciences or a closely related field. A strong background in statistical modeling, ecology, or environmental science is preferred. Experience with capture-recapture data, hierarchical models, or interdisciplinary research is advantageous. Proficiency in English is required. The position is full-time (37.5 hours per week) and temporary, with one offer available.
For more information and to apply, visit the official JobbNorge portal. The application deadline is 15 April 2026. Contact the supervisor, T.H. Ergon, at [email protected] for further details. The position is not funded through the EU Research Framework Programme.
