The University of Bergen invites applications for a PhD Research Fellow in Statistics, based in the Department of Mathematics. This position is part of the Statistics and Data Science group and focuses on advanced statistical and machine learning methods applied to finance and insurance. The research project encompasses simulation and risk modelling, strategic portfolio management, dependency structure modelling for financial assets, effects of climate change and uncertainty in life and non-life insurance, and data-driven prediction of insurance premiums with uncertainty quantification.
The fellowship is for a fixed-term period of three years, with the possibility of a fourth year dedicated to career-promoting work such as teaching, dissemination, or research infrastructure. The successful candidate will collaborate with the STEM Education center (SERC) at the University of Bergen, contributing to the educational program in Finance, Insurance, and Data Science.
Applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent in Statistics, Actuarial Science, or Data Analytics, or have submitted their master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. Master students may apply if they complete their final master exam before 15 July 2026. Experience in finance or insurance data analysis, time series analysis, financial econometrics, and statistical learning is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate good written and oral English skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and strong personal and relational qualities. Research experience, ambitions, and potential will be considered during evaluation.
The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 568,700, with further increases based on length of service. Additional benefits include enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund and welfare benefits. The employment period may be reduced if the candidate has previously held a qualifying post.
As a PhD Research Fellow, participation in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree is required within three years. The deadline for applying to the PhD programme at the Faculty of Science and Technology is two months after starting the position. The University of Bergen is subject to export control regulations, which will be applied during the application process.
