About this position
This PhD Research Grant in Prehistoric Archaeology (Zooarchaeology) at the Universidad de Cantabria offers a unique opportunity to conduct advanced research on Magdalenian faunal remains from the renowned La Garma site. The successful candidate will undertake a detailed analysis of these prehistoric animal assemblages, comparing them with similar evidence from northern Spain and the Pyrenees. The project also involves revising faunal assemblages associated with Magdalenian ritual activities and performing comparative analyses between habitational and ritual contexts.
The grant holder will join the SCOPE research group within the Instituto Internacional de Investigaciones Prehistóricas de Cantabria (IIIPC), a leading centre specializing in Prehistory and Palaeolithic studies. The IIIPC is known for its dynamic research environment and international collaborations, providing an excellent setting for doctoral training and academic growth.
This fully funded position offers a competitive salary of 24,468.15 € per year, plus 7,000 € for tuition fees and additional support for academic stays at other research centres. The grant duration is four years, starting January 15, 2026. The position is not funded by the EU Research Framework Programme and is based in Santander, Cantabria, Spain.
Eligibility requirements include a university education in Archaeology, a Master's degree or equivalent in Archaeology or Prehistory, and eligibility for PhD programme admission in the 2025-2026 academic year. Candidates must have previous experience in Archaeozoology, training in computer and statistical tools, and experience in Spatial Archaeology. The research will involve both direct analysis of faunal remains and the use of advanced analytical techniques.
Applications are open until December 15, 2025, 14:00 (Europe/Madrid). Prospective candidates should apply via the university's online portal and ensure they meet all eligibility criteria. For further information, applicants can contact [email protected] or visit the IIIPC website.
