About this position
The Universitat Politècnica de València invites applications for a PhD research project focused on nutrient recovery using electromembrane reactors, as part of the EU-funded Water4All (ReWAdd) initiative. The successful candidate will join the Electrochemical Engineering Research Group, led by Professor Valentín Pérez Herranz, and contribute to innovative research at the intersection of chemical engineering, environmental science, and materials science.
This project aims to advance technologies for recovering valuable nutrients from wastewater streams, leveraging state-of-the-art electrochemical methods and membrane technologies. Key research activities include characterizing water samples for nutrient potential using ion chromatography, total organic carbon analysis, and HPLC-MS; evaluating ion transport and selectivity through various ion-exchange membranes; performing electrochemical characterization (voltammetry, chronopotentiometry, EIS); and exploring bipolar membrane electrodialysis for producing fertilizer precursors. The candidate will also participate in pilot plant testing within living labs and engage in dissemination activities such as international conferences and scientific publications.
The position offers full access to advanced electrochemical devices, analytical equipment, and doctoral courses, providing a stimulating environment for professional growth. Funding is provided through the EU Horizon Europe framework, ensuring a full-time contract and comprehensive research support. The project is particularly suited for candidates passionate about water treatment technologies and sustainable resource management.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering or a related discipline. Essential skills include enthusiasm for water treatment, prior knowledge of electrochemistry and chemical analysis, excellent English proficiency, and good Spanish skills. The group values collaborative spirit and a willingness to grow within a dynamic research team.
To apply, send your CV and a brief expression of interest to Prof. Valentín Pérez Herranz at [email protected]. For further information, visit the group’s academic page or contact [email protected]. The application deadline is April 30, 2026, and early applications are encouraged. This opportunity is ideal for motivated researchers seeking to make a meaningful impact in sustainable water management and nutrient recovery.
