About this position

The NHH Norwegian School of Economics is offering two fully-funded PhD Research Scholar positions within the ENERPOL Doctoral Network, a prestigious European research and training initiative funded by the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA). The ENERPOL network focuses on the role of households in the green energy transition, addressing critical challenges such as volatile energy prices, inequality, and household risk exposure, while generating policy-relevant insights for fair and efficient energy systems.

As a PhD Research Scholar in this programme, you will join an international consortium of leading universities and non-academic partners, benefiting from a unique training environment that includes international summer schools, workshops, cross-national supervision teams, and both academic and industry secondments. The two available positions will focus on: (1) advancing methods to compute and analyse energy-related household inequality using granular Norwegian household data, and (2) quantifying the effects of electricity price subsidies on household behaviour and inequality, including the impact on prosumers.

The PhD programme at NHH is a four-year, fully-funded position with an annual salary of NOK 565,000 (approx. EUR 48,150 or USD 55,940) as of August 2026, in line with EU MSCA guidelines. The package includes mobility payments, family or special needs allowances where applicable, and annual salary adjustments. Norwegian taxes, public health care, and pension benefits are included, ensuring a high standard of living in Norway. The start date is August 2026, and the place of work is at NHH in Bergen, a city known for its mild climate, cultural opportunities, and family-friendly environment.

PhD candidates will specialise in either Business Economics or Management Science, with the flexibility to combine elements from both tracks. Core coursework includes econometrics, microeconomics, scientific methods, optimisation, and electives in economics, finance, operations research, statistics, and data science. The programme prepares graduates for academic careers at top international institutions and for roles in knowledge-intensive industries, government, banking, and consulting.

Applicants must have a five-year MSc degree in Economics, Public Policy, Energy Economics, or a related field, with a minimum average grade of B (4.0) in the Norwegian system. The MSCA DN mobility rule applies: candidates must not have resided or worked/studied in Norway for more than 12 months in the 36 months prior to the start date. Applicants must not already hold a doctoral degree. English proficiency is required (TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic), unless exempted by native status or qualifying degree. Submission of GMAT or GRE scores is strongly encouraged.

To apply, submit your application via the Jobbnorge portal by 15 January 2026, including all required documents: degree certificates, transcripts, statement of purpose, research proposal, CV, writing sample, and list of publications. Letters of recommendation are optional and can be sent to [email protected]. For further details, visit the NHH PhD website or contact [email protected].

NHH values diversity and encourages applications from qualified candidates regardless of gender, cultural background, age, or disabilities. The school offers career guidance, research funds for travel and conferences, and opportunities for research stays abroad. Healthcare, schools, and most public services are free in Norway, making it an attractive destination for international researchers.
