About this position

This PhD position at KU Leuven, in collaboration with the University of Essex, offers an exciting opportunity to investigate cognitive control and multitasking in the digital age. The project is embedded within the Cognitive Control in Context research group, a dynamic team of international scientists studying how cognitive control is exerted in today's complex environments. The research aims to understand how multitasking and cognitive control interact, especially in the context of our information-rich digital society, and how these processes differ between young and older adults.

The project will use a multi-method approach, including behavioral experiments, clinical studies, and neurocognitive research (EEG, psychophysiology). The PhD student will focus on neural indices of cognitive control, analyzing event-related potentials, time-frequency analysis, and functional connectivity within cognitive-motor dual task paradigms. To enhance ecological validity, laboratory findings will be translated to real-life settings, such as a naturalistic cooking task for older adults, implemented in a kitchen environment with structured training.

Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a Master’s degree in cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology, biomedical sciences, or a related field by October 1, 2026. Strong academic performance, experience with behavioral experimentation, programming, advanced statistical analysis, and/or EEG are assets. High proficiency in English is required; Dutch is advantageous for working with older populations. Candidates should possess strong statistical and methodological skills, a quantitative background, programming skills (R, Python, Matlab), familiarity with scientific methods in psychology, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a collaborative attitude. Experience with older adults is preferred or enthusiasm to work with this population.

The position offers a stimulating and dynamic work environment with excellent research facilities. The PhD trajectory spans four years, with an initial one-year appointment extended upon positive evaluation. The net salary is highly competitive internationally and follows KU Leuven’s fellowship scales. Professional development is supported through doctoral training, workshops, courses, seminars, conferences, and opportunities for stays abroad. The PhD student will spend 90% of their time on research and 10% on teaching assignments, including practical sessions, exam support, and student guidance.

KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, fostering a respectful and socially safe environment. The application deadline is May 15, 2026. Candidates should apply online, submitting a CV (with at least two academic referees’ email addresses), a motivation letter, and a detailed overview of study results and grades. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview on June 5, 2026, either in Leuven or online. For further information, contact Prof. Dr. Eva Van den Bussche ([email protected]) or Dr. Gethin Hughes ([email protected]).
