PhD Researcher in Policing and Security at Leuven Institute of Criminology (LINC) KU Leuven in Belgium

The Leuven Institute of Criminology (LINC) at KU Leuven is offering a full-time PhD researcher position in the field of policing and security. LINC, part of the Faculty of Law and Criminology, is a vibrant research unit with around 70 professors, researchers, and assistants dedicated to criminological research and teaching. The main assignment for the successful candidate will be to conduct doctoral research focusing on empirical studies involving policing actors such as public police, private security companies, inspection services, and intelligence agencies. The research is expected to rely primarily on qualitative methods and may be conducted both in Belgium and abroad.

In addition to research responsibilities, the PhD researcher will provide limited support in teaching assignments, including supervision of Master’s theses, assisting with marking tasks and exams, and exam supervision. The position offers a one-year contract with the possibility of extension up to four years, providing a stable and supportive environment for doctoral studies.

Applicants must have a master’s degree in criminology or other relevant social sciences or humanities (such as public management, political science, sociology, or organizational psychology) and must have achieved very good marks (at least once ‘cum laude’). Candidates should demonstrate strong knowledge and interest in qualitative and possibly quantitative research methods, possess excellent academic writing and teaching skills, and be adept at both teamwork and independent work. Proficiency in Dutch, both oral and written, is essential.
