About this position

PhD Researcher opportunity at the University of Bayreuth in the project Translating Brazilian Development Ideas in Africa (TRABRADIA) within the Cluster of Excellence Africa Multiple.

The position focuses on policy translation, South-South development cooperation, and the local adaptation of Brazil’s National School Feeding Program in Malawi. The successful candidate will conduct a qualitative case study with fieldwork in Malawi and Brazil, including key-informant interviews, archival research, and library-based data collection.

This is a research associate position in Global Nutrition and Health Policy, supervised by Prof. Dr. Tim Dorlach, with the opportunity to pursue a PhD at the Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS). The role is embedded in an internationally connected, interdisciplinary environment and includes structured training through the Cluster International Career Centre (CLICC).

Eligibility: applicants should have a completed Master’s degree in Political Science, Sociology, Development Studies, African Studies, or a related field. Strong interest in nutrition policy, social policy, development cooperation, and/or Africa-Latin America relations is expected. Very good written and spoken English is required. Experience with qualitative methods is desirable, as is knowledge of Chichewa and/or Portuguese and prior fieldwork or study experience in Africa and/or Latin America.

Funding: the position is funded by the Cluster of Excellence EXC 2052 Africa Multiple and paid according to E 13 TV-L (75%) for 48 months. The post is a fixed-term research associate role rather than a scholarship, and no separate stipend amount is stated.

Application deadline: 15 June 2026. Apply online via the University of Bayreuth Applicant Portal with a motivation letter, CV, certificates, transcripts, at least two referees, and optionally a master’s thesis copy.
