About this position

The University of Twente invites applications for a four-year PhD position as part of the DynamiCity project, a Horizon Europe initiative focused on transforming urban transport systems into net positive contributors for health, wellbeing, and cancer prevention. The project aims to shift the paradigm of urban mobility, positioning transport as a strategic tool to promote healthy lifestyles and improve quality of life, especially for cancer survivors. The research will explore active mobility (walking, cycling) and micro-mobility (e.g., moped) options, assessing their impact on health and sustainable urban mobility.

As a PhD researcher, you will work in a multidisciplinary environment, collaborating with European cities and partners to make a lasting societal impact. The municipality of Helmond in the Netherlands serves as a living lab for pilot implementations. Your research will involve designing and specifying smart mobility technologies, such as dynamic traffic light systems and app-infrastructure connections, to support active mobility. You will quantify safety implications for pedestrians, cyclists, and micro-mobility users, and evaluate how these interventions influence travel behavior and reduce health disparities across neighborhoods.

The position is embedded within the Faculty of Engineering Technology, which specializes in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Industrial Design Engineering. The faculty is part of a 'people-first' university of technology, internationally recognized for its contributions to health technology, smart regions, and sustainable resources. You will be enrolled in the Twente Graduate School and benefit from world-class research facilities, mentorship, and a dynamic campus environment.

Funding includes a competitive salary starting at €3059 gross per month, rising to €3881 in the fourth year, with additional holiday and year-end bonuses, a solid pension scheme, and generous leave days. The university values internationalization and offers a stimulating ecosystem for professional and personal growth.

Applicants should have a Master’s degree in civil engineering, transport engineering, computer science, intelligent transport systems, biomedical engineering, or a related health discipline. Strong interdisciplinary skills, proficiency in English (C1; above IELTS 7), and communication abilities are required. Dutch language skills are preferred for stakeholder engagement. To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, MSc research description, and contact details of two referees via the University of Twente careers portal by April 5, 2026. For questions, contact Dr. Baran Ulak at [email protected]. Interviews will be conducted online and possibly in-person. Screening is part of the procedure.

This opportunity offers the chance to contribute to innovative research at the intersection of transport, health, and technology, with real-world applications and societal impact.
