About this position

The Department of Plant Sciences at the Faculty of Biosciences, Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), invites applications for a three-year PhD position focused on crop physiology and breeding, specifically targeting the environmental and genetic control of maturation in faba bean under Norwegian growing conditions. Faba bean, a grain legume with high protein content and nitrogen-fixing capabilities, is increasingly valued for its role in sustainable agriculture. However, its adaptation to the Nordic climate, particularly regarding late maturation, remains a challenge. This project aims to address these issues by characterizing environmental factors (such as temperature, photoperiod, and water availability) affecting maturation traits, analyzing genetic variation and genotype-environment interactions, and developing genomic prediction models for improved crop performance.

The successful candidate will participate in field experiments, data collection, molecular genotyping, and statistical analyses, contributing to scientific publications and completing required courses. The research is associated with the ProMax, FutureProteinCrops, and Fabanova projects, all dedicated to advancing faba bean cultivation for the Nordic region. The position offers a government pay scale salary of 550,800 NOK per annum, with potential for a higher salary for exceptionally qualified candidates. Employment follows national guidelines for University and Technical College PhD scholars.

Applicants must hold a five-year master’s degree in plant science, plant biology, plant physiology, genetics, or a related field, or be on track to complete their degree by 1st September 2026. A strong academic background, proficiency in written and oral English, and expertise in crop physiology, genetics, statistics, and academic writing are required. Candidates should demonstrate motivation, openness to learning, analytical skills, and strong communication and cooperation abilities. Documentation of English proficiency must comply with NMBU PhD regulation section 5-2 (3).

To apply, candidates should submit an online application via the University's Web Recruitment System, including a motivation letter, CV, certified academic diplomas and certificates (with English translations if necessary), documentation of English proficiency, names and contact details for two references, and any additional relevant documentation. The application deadline is 29th March 2026. For further information, contact Professor Åshild Ergon at [email protected].
