About this position

The Graduate School of North American Studies (GSNAS) at Freie Universität Berlin is inviting applications for its doctoral program starting October 2026. This opportunity is open to candidates with a completed M.A. or equivalent degree and above average grades in American/Canadian Cultural Studies, American/Canadian Literature, Economics, History, Political Science, or Sociology. Applicants must submit a comprehensive application including a CV, statement of purpose, degree certificates, an 8-10 page dissertation outline, work plan, writing sample (15-20 pages), and two letters of reference. Proof of English proficiency is required for non-native speakers or those without a degree from an English-instruction university (minimum TOEFL 100 iBT or equivalent IELTS/CAE/CPE). Applicants who have not completed their MA/MSc by the deadline must show two-thirds of credits earned and submit final documents by July 31, 2026. Reapplications must include a thoroughly revised dissertation outline.
