The Graduate School of North American Studies (GSNAS) at Freie Universität Berlin is inviting applications for its doctoral program starting October 2026. This opportunity is open to candidates with a completed M.A. or equivalent degree and above average grades in American/Canadian Cultural Studies, American/Canadian Literature, Economics, History, Political Science, or Sociology. The program offers a vibrant research environment focused on North American topics, with interdisciplinary approaches encouraged.

Funding is available through two DAAD scholarships (€1,400/month plus health insurance and rent subsidy for up to four years, for international applicants who have not resided in Germany for more than 12 months before applying) and two GSNAS doctoral scholarships (€1,650/month for one year, covering the core curriculum). Additionally, doctoral memberships/affiliations are available for candidates who have secured external PhD funding. Self-funded dissertations are not permitted.

Applicants must submit a comprehensive application including a CV, statement of purpose, degree certificates, an 8-10 page dissertation outline, work plan, writing sample (15-20 pages), and two letters of reference. Proof of English proficiency is required for non-native speakers or those without a degree from an English-instruction university (minimum TOEFL 100 iBT or equivalent IELTS/CAE/CPE). Applicants who have not completed their MA/MSc by the deadline must show two-thirds of credits earned and submit final documents by July 31, 2026. Reapplications must include a thoroughly revised dissertation outline.
