About this position

McMaster University’s Department of Civil Engineering is offering two fully funded PhD scholarships in the area of Optimization of Electric Mobility Solutions, with a focus on sustainable transit. The successful candidates will work under the supervision of Associate Professor Moataz Mohamed, Director of the McMaster Institute for Transportation & Logistics (MITL). The research projects include the optimization of zero-emission buses for transit applications and energy management, estimation, and forecasting for zero-emission buses. These projects are ideal for candidates interested in electric mobility, transportation systems, and sustainability.

Applicants should have a strong background in optimization, transportation systems, or electric mobility, and must hold a master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Operations Research/Engineering, Industrial and Systems Engineering, Engineering Mathematics, or a closely related field. Research activities will involve system-level analysis of electric mobility solutions, mathematical modeling, vehicle routing algorithms, integration of renewable energy resources, and quantification of environmental impacts. Experience with multi-vehicle routing problems and/or optimization modeling is essential, and proficiency in at least one programming language (Python, MATLAB, R, C++, or Java) is required, with Python experience particularly encouraged.

The application process requires submission of a single PDF containing a resume, academic transcripts, a statement of research interest, and a list of publications (if applicable). Applications should be sent to [email protected]. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the positions are filled. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. The start date is September 2026 or January 2027.

McMaster University is recognized for its innovative programs, cutting-edge research, and commitment to student-centered education. The university is ranked among the top 100 globally and is dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive research environment.
