About this position
This PhD stipend at Aalborg University offers an exciting opportunity to join the Electrochemistry Research Group within the Department of Chemistry and Bioscience. The project focuses on the fundamental understanding of the coupling between nanomaterial surfaces and enzymatic bioelectrochemistry, a process that leverages electrochemistry to drive redox reactions catalyzed by enzymes. This research has broad applications, including biosensors, biofuel cells, and biosynthesis for 'power-to-X' technologies.
The successful candidate will engage in nanomaterials-based electrode fabrication, synthesis of redox-active polymers, enzyme immobilization, electrochemical characterization, and surface analysis using a wide range of techniques. Key research areas include bioelectrochemical regeneration of NADH cofactors for reductive biocatalysis and nitrogenase bioelectrochemistry, generating synergy with ongoing externally funded projects in the group. The project aims to advance knowledge on efficient bioelectrosynthesis as a practical solution for real-world challenges.
In addition to research, the PhD candidate will contribute to teaching and supervision, mainly through student project supervision. The department is a vibrant research and educational institution with approximately 150 employees, 75 PhD students, and 775 bachelor and master’s students across campuses in Aalborg and Esbjerg. The work culture emphasizes openness, curiosity, transparency, and involvement, with flexible hours and social activities throughout the year.
Applicants should have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration, particularly in polymer chemistry and biocatalysis. A Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, electrochemistry, materials science, biochemistry, or a closely related field is required. Experience with nanomaterials, bioelectrochemistry, electrochemistry, photochemistry, analytical chemistry, and/or spectroscopy is advantageous. Strong English communication skills are essential, while Danish language skills are not required.
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree and are normally for a period of 3 years. Enrollment at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science is required, with completion of PhD courses (30 ECTS), teaching/supervision experience, and an external research stay (3-6 months) at a foreign institution. Salary and terms of employment follow the AC collective agreement.
To apply, submit your application, CV, diplomas, and other relevant documents via Aalborg University's recruitment system. The application should state your reasons for applying and qualifications. All applicants will be informed about shortlisting after the deadline. For questions, contact Associate Professor Xinxin Xiao or the AAU PhD office.
