About this position
The European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser Facility GmbH (European XFEL) in the Hamburg area, Germany, offers a PhD position focused on advancing high-temperature superconducting (HTS) undulator technology. The successful candidate will join the Undulator Systems group and contribute to the development of HTS tape-based undulators for synchrotron and free-electron laser (FEL) applications. This research aims to significantly enhance photon beam brilliance and extend the accessible X-ray energy range, leveraging the unique properties of REBCO (Rare-Earth Barium Copper Oxide) tapes to achieve substantially higher magnetic fields compared to conventional permanent-magnet and low-temperature superconducting undulators.
Key responsibilities include design optimization of HTS undulator coils, modeling electromagnetic behavior, investigating quench behavior and protection mechanisms, preparing prototypes, analyzing experimental results, and developing manufacturing processes. The position also requires completion and defense of a doctoral thesis.
Applicants must have a master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, applied superconductivity, or a closely related field, along with strong English communication skills. Preferred qualifications include experience in device design or construction, prior work with superconducting magnets, accelerator physics, or undulator technology, hands-on experience with cryogenic systems and magnetic field measurements, proficiency in numerical modeling and simulation tools (such as COMSOL, ANSYS, CST), programming skills in Python or MATLAB, and knowledge of magnetic field simulations.
The working location is Schenefeld, within the Hamburg metropolitan area. European XFEL offers a vibrant international and multicultural environment, competitive salary and benefits similar to public service organizations in Germany, including family-friendly policies, flexible working times, 30 days of vacation, extensive relocation support, a generous pension scheme, subsidized company restaurant, partially financed public transportation tickets, training opportunities (including English and German language classes), and free access to a mental health platform. The company language is English.
The appointment is limited to three years. European XFEL is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from diverse backgrounds. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference over equally qualified candidates.
To apply, submit your CV, motivation letter in English, and any reference letters via the online portal before 15 April 2026. For further information, contact Dr. Sara Casalbuoni at [email protected]. More details about the facility and working conditions can be found at www.xfel.eu.
