About this position

The European XFEL GmbH, located in the Hamburg metropolitan area, offers a part-time PhD position focused on Warm Dense Matter X-ray spectroscopy. The European XFEL operates a world-class 3.4 km-long X-ray laser facility, enabling advanced research in physics, chemistry, life sciences, and materials science. The successful candidate will join the HED (High Energy Density) instrument team and undertake the research project titled “High resolution measurements of the electronic response of materials in Warm Dense Matter.”

The PhD student will plan, prepare, and perform X-ray heating and shock-compression experiments using the DiPOLE laser system. Responsibilities include acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting experimental data, combining spectroscopy and diffraction with theoretical models and simulations. The candidate will present research findings at international conferences and workshops, publish in peer-reviewed journals, and actively participate in the collaborative research environment at HED, including interactions with external user groups and research consortia. Completion and defense of a doctoral thesis within the project duration is expected.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, or a related field, preferably with a background in experimental plasma physics, atomic physics, X-ray techniques, or related areas. Prior experience with experimental methods in X-ray optics, spectroscopy, or plasma physics is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in HED physics and motivation to work in large-scale international research collaborations. Basic programming and data analysis skills are required; familiarity with Python is beneficial. Good communication skills and proficiency in written and spoken English are necessary. Readiness to participate in experimental experiments, including shift work, is required.

The working location is Schenefeld, in the Hamburg area. The European XFEL offers a vibrant international and multicultural team environment, cutting-edge scientific and technical progress, and participation in international networks. Salary and benefits are similar to those of public service organizations in Germany, including a generous company pension scheme (6.45% of monthly salary), extensive relocation benefits, monthly social events, subsidized company restaurant, partially financed job-tickets for public transportation, 30 days of vacation, additional childcare days, flexible working times, option for work from home, and extensive training opportunities including subsidized English and German language classes. The company language is English.

The appointment is initially limited to 4 years. Applicants with disabilities will be given preference over other equally qualified candidates. The application deadline is 10 June 2026. For further information, contact Dr. Thomas Preston ([email protected]). Apply online via the provided portal and submit your CV, motivation letter in English, and any reference letters. More information about the European XFEL and working in Germany can be found at www.xfel.eu.
