About this position

Jönköping University invites applications for a PhD position in AI and Cybersecurity, connected to the AI-REASON research project: AI-assisted Reliable and Explainable Analysis for Security OperatioNs. The project aims to develop an AI-assisted decision support system for security operations, focusing on methods that combine Machine Learning (ML) techniques and Large Language Model (LLM)-based reasoning. The goal is to enable faster security decisions, more reliable incident assessment, and explainable outputs in security operations environments.

As a doctoral student, your primary responsibility will be doctoral studies, including coursework, participation in scientific conferences, publishing papers, writing a licentiate thesis, and ultimately a doctoral dissertation. Up to 20% of your time may be allocated to teaching or administrative duties. The position offers a dynamic working environment at a collaborative, internationally connected university with strong industry ties. All students benefit from hands-on experience through internships, and the university is located in the city centre of Jönköping, surrounded by beautiful nature and lakes.

Applicants must have a second-cycle degree in computer science, computer engineering, or informatics, with at least 240 credits (minimum 60 at second cycle level) or equivalent knowledge. Essential skills include knowledge of machine learning and AI-based reasoning, basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts, research methodology, programming skills, collaboration and planning abilities, and proficiency in English (spoken and written). Advantageous qualifications include experience with ML, data analysis, AI-based systems, LLMs, cybersecurity or security operations, and software development or system implementation.

The position is full-time, temporary employment, starting in August 2026 or as agreed. Salary is in accordance with collective agreements, starting at 35,900 SEK/month. The university offers an equal and inclusive workplace and welcomes applicants from diverse backgrounds. For more information about the university, conditions, and benefits, visit www.ju.se.
