About this position

Linköping University invites applications for a PhD student position in automatic control at the Department of Electrical Engineering (ISY). The research focuses on complex networks and multi-agent dynamics, with particular emphasis on opinion dynamics, distributed coordination, optimization, and learning. The work encompasses both theoretical and computational aspects, including the development and application of dynamic models to analyze sociotechnological networks and interactions between humans and AI agents, such as LLM-based chatbots and autonomous vehicles.

As a PhD student, you will primarily engage in doctoral studies and research projects, with the possibility of teaching or other departmental duties up to 20% of full-time. The Division of Automatic Control offers a vibrant, internationally oriented research environment, balancing theory and real-world applications. Key research areas include autonomous systems, data-driven modeling, learning-based control, optimization, complex networks, and sensor fusion. The division is characterized by close integration of methodological development and practical applications, extensive collaborations with industrial partners, and leading research groups worldwide, providing excellent opportunities for international exposure and impactful research.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree in electrical engineering, engineering physics, computer science, or applied mathematics, or have completed at least 240 credits with 60 credits in advanced courses within these subjects. Equivalent knowledge acquired in another way is also acceptable. Candidates should demonstrate strong analytical skills, scientific approach, initiative, independence, and the ability to communicate clearly in English, both orally and in writing. The degree requirement must be fulfilled by the time the employment contract is signed.

The position is fully funded, with a starting salary of 36,400 SEK per month before tax. As an employee, you will be eligible for Swedish social benefits, including universal health care, paid parental leave, subsidized childcare, and the national pension system. The employment is normally four years full-time, with possible extension up to five years based on teaching and institutional assignments. Initial employment is for one year, with renewals up to two years at a time depending on progress.
