About this position

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, is a world-leading international research centre specializing in the production of intense X-ray beams for scientific experiments across a wide range of disciplines. Supported by 19 countries and employing a diverse workforce, ESRF is renowned for its innovative engineering and pioneering scientific vision.

This PhD position is based within the Beam Dynamics group, focusing on the design and development of a 6 GeV electron linear accelerator (linac) as part of the ESRF accelerator complex upgrade. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and implementation of a test facility for high gradient accelerating structures, working closely with global experts in accelerator physics.

Key responsibilities include developing beam dynamics models to simulate and study single and multi-particle effects for the linac injector, designing the linac magnetic layout and correction schemes, verifying beam parameters for efficient injection into the ESRF-EBS storage ring, and participating in the preparation and implementation of the test facility for high accelerating gradient RF structures. The candidate will also be expected to publish results in relevant journals and conference proceedings.

Applicants must possess a degree qualifying for PhD enrollment (such as MSc, Master 2, Laurea, or equivalent 300 ECTS) in Applied Physics or Electrical Engineering. Essential skills include proficiency in Python and object-oriented programming, a strong interest in accelerator design and beam optimization, and fluency in English. Enrollment in a University/Doctoral School is a hiring condition.

ESRF offers a competitive compensation and allowances package, including financial support for relocation to Grenoble. The contract is for two years, renewable for one additional year. The institute provides a vibrant international environment, opportunities for collaboration, and a workplace designed to support quality of life.

For further information, candidates may contact Simone Liuzzo ([email protected]). Details on employment terms and conditions are available at ESRF Jobs. Applications from disabled persons are encouraged as part of ESRF's equal opportunity policy.
