About this position

Karolinska Institutet invites applications for a fully funded PhD student position in Early-life Microbial Exposures and Type 1 Diabetes, based at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge. The successful candidate will join the internationally recognized Flodström Tullberg group, which focuses on the natural history of type 1 diabetes and the development of preventative treatments. The group’s research explores environmental triggers, such as viral infections and microbial exposures, using advanced molecular, cellular, and model systems to bridge fundamental research with clinical applications.

This doctoral project investigates how early exposure to diverse environmental microbes shapes the developing immune system and influences the risk of type 1 diabetes. The main aim is to examine microbial richness and diversity in outdoor daycare environments across Sweden, integrating fieldwork, DNA extraction, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis. The project also involves applying statistical models and integrating microbiome data with environmental variables from aerial imagery, geospatial datasets, and AI-assisted land-cover classification. National diabetes registries will be used to map local type 1 diabetes incidence.

The student will conduct three rounds of environmental sampling at selected daycares during winter, spring, and fall, and will contribute to experimental design, data analysis, and publication of results. Participation in group meetings, seminars, scientific conferences, and supervision of master’s students is expected. The research environment is dynamic, collaborative, and offers opportunities for international exchange.

Eligibility requires a master’s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, biomedicine, cell biology, or a related field, or at least 240 credits (with 60 at the master’s level). Proficiency in English (equivalent to Swedish upper secondary school English B/English 6) is mandatory. Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills are essential. Laboratory experience in DNA extraction and 16S rRNA sequencing, programming for data analysis, and fieldwork are strong assets. Personal suitability, including curiosity and enthusiasm for research, is highly valued.

The position is a full-time, four-year doctoral studentship with a contractual monthly salary. Additional benefits include free access to a modern gym and medical care reimbursements.
