About this position

The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, Germany, is offering a fully funded PhD position in the field of Tumor Immunology and Gut Microbiome. DKFZ is one of Europe’s largest and most renowned cancer research centers, dedicated to advancing scientific discovery for a life without cancer. The successful candidate will join the Clinical Cooperation Unit “Applied Tumor Immunity” and the Translational Research in Immuno-oncology and Microbiome (TRIM) group, working at the forefront of immunotherapy and microbiome research.

This project focuses on investigating how the gut microbiota influences resistance to immunotherapy and chemotherapy in colorectal cancer. The research aims to identify microbial-derived factors that modulate tumor immunogenicity, discover novel therapeutic targets, and develop combination strategies to overcome microbiome-driven immune suppression. The work involves integrating multi-omics datasets (including metabolomics, high-dimensional flow cytometry, and multiplex imaging), conducting high-throughput in vitro screening with 2D cell culture systems, and performing studies using mouse- and patient-derived organoid models as well as in vivo experiments with advanced preclinical systems.

The PhD student will be part of a multidisciplinary team with close connections to clinical practice and bioinformatics, benefiting from a collaborative and innovative research environment. The position is embedded in a high-profile international consortium, providing access to state-of-the-art technologies, cross-disciplinary expertise, and exceptional training and career development opportunities.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in cancer biology, immunology, microbiology, infection biology, or a related discipline, and meet all academic requirements of the DKFZ PhD Program. Required skills include molecular and cellular biology techniques (high-dimensional flow cytometry, gene expression analysis, cell culture, microbiology), with experience in metabolomics and data analysis highly desirable. Excellent communication and organizational skills, the ability to work independently and collaboratively, and enthusiasm for onco-immunology and microbiome research are essential. Experience in animal experimentation is a plus. Proof of immunity against measles is required for employment.

The position is funded for three years and supported by an EU programme and international consortium. Interested candidates should submit a CV, cover letter, academic transcripts, and contact details of two references via the online application portal. Applications by email or post are not accepted. The application deadline is December 19, 2025.

DKFZ values diversity and encourages applications from talented individuals regardless of gender, cultural background, nationality, ethnicity, sexual identity, physical ability, religion, or age. People with severe disabilities are given preference if equally qualified.
