About this position

The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), a Severo Ochoa Center of Excellence, invites applications for a PhD position focused on intranasal treatment and imaging of neurological disorders using nanoparticles. ICN2 is a leading research center in nanoscience and nanotechnology, committed to advancing knowledge at the nanoscale and fostering innovation and broad training for future researchers. The institute hosts 19 research groups and offers a vibrant, international environment in Bellaterra (Barcelona).

This PhD opportunity is based within the Nanostructured Functional Materials (Nanosfun) group, renowned for its expertise in nanoscale materials for medical applications. The group specializes in physicochemical characterization, biofunctionalization, colloidal stabilization in physiological environments, and controlled release mechanisms. The project benefits from the recent addition of researchers with strong backgrounds in synthesis, glycans, and biostructures, enhancing its multidisciplinary approach.

The successful candidate will engage in the synthesis, modification, and functionalization of nanoparticles and nanocapsules, employing various synthetic strategies. Responsibilities include chemical and morphological characterization using advanced techniques such as FTIR, UV-Vis, electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), TGA, NMR, EPR, and elemental analysis. The project also involves determining key nanoparticle features like toxicity, colloidal stability, and controlled release, as well as in vitro and in vivo validation in relevant environments. Data management and analysis, including the use of AI, are integral to the role.

Applicants should possess a Bachelor and Master Degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline. Essential skills include experience with colloid science, characterization techniques, in vitro studies, biochemistry, and chemical synthesis and modification of nanoparticles/nanocapsules. Proficiency in microscopic and spectroscopic methods (FTIR, UV-vis, EA, TGA, NMR, SEM, TEM, FIB) and in vitro experiments is required. Strong communication and writing skills, fluency in Spanish and English, motivation, commitment, independence, teamwork, and technical report writing ability are expected.

The position offers a full-time contract (37.5h/week) for four years, with salary based on qualifications and experience. Benefits include life insurance, relocation support, flexible work schedules, 28 holidays per year, a flexible compensation plan (covering health insurance, childcare, training), and access to training activities such as language courses, mentoring, and wellbeing programs. ICN2 provides an inclusive, discrimination-free work environment and values diversity and equal opportunity.

Funding is provided by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and FSE+ under project PID2024-161565OB-C21. Applications are accepted year-round and reviewed continuously. To apply, candidates must submit a cover letter, full CV with contact details, and two reference letters or referee contacts via the ICN2 website.

This is an excellent opportunity for motivated candidates to join a world-class research team and contribute to cutting-edge advances in nanomedicine for neurological disorders.
