About this position
The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, part of the ETH Domain, is offering a fully funded PhD student position in Bedload Dynamics. WSL is renowned for its research on the sustainable use and protection of the environment, as well as the management of natural hazards. The Mountain Hydrology and Mass Movement research unit investigates processes such as landslides and debris flows in mountainous terrains.
This PhD project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, focuses on the dynamics and spatial-temporal variability of bedload transport. The research will leverage WSL’s torrential observatory at Erlenbach (Alptal, Switzerland) and employ novel monitoring methods, including seismic nodes and fibre optic technology with distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). The main objective is to develop advanced monitoring capabilities to observe bedload mobilization along torrent reaches, using a network of near-torrent seismic sensors for high-resolution temporal and spatial data.
The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in a scientific or engineering discipline, with strong analytical skills in time series analysis and data interpretation based on fundamental physical theories. Proficiency in Python or Matlab and experience handling large datasets are essential. Additional expertise in seismic interferometry and/or machine learning is considered a plus. The project involves substantial fieldwork, requiring interest in outdoor sensor deployments, data acquisition, and maintenance of field installations. Publication of scientific results in geoscience journals is expected, and candidates must demonstrate good English proficiency and teamwork skills. German language skills are advantageous for field campaign management.
WSL is committed to diversity, inclusion, and gender equality, fostering an open and supportive work environment. The position is based at Zürcherstrasse 111, CH-8903 Birmensdorf, Switzerland, with a planned start date of January 2027.
Applications must be submitted via the WSL application portal. Please upload all required documents; email applications will not be considered. For further information, contact Dr Fabian Walter. WSL actively encourages applications from diverse backgrounds.
