About this position

The VIB-UGent Center for Plant Systems Biology (PSB) is a world-leading plant science institute located in Ghent, Belgium, dedicated to integrating genetics, cell biology, genomics, and bio-computing to unravel plant biological processes and translate this knowledge into societal value. The Jenny Russinova lab at PSB specializes in brassinosteroid hormone research, focusing on the regulation of cell division and differentiation in plant development. Phytohormones are central to controlling the plant cell cycle, and the synergy of hormone signalling pathways is critical for cell cycle progression. Advanced technologies such as single-cell genomics and live-cell imaging enable the exploration of hormone regulation at single-cell resolution, revealing dynamic fluctuations in brassinosteroid signalling throughout the cell cycle.

This PhD project aims to investigate how hormonal signals are integrated and coordinated to control the plant cell cycle machinery. The research will combine live-cell imaging, phosphoproteomics, and metabolite profiling to unravel the complexity of phytohormonal regulation at the cellular level. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and international research environment, with access to state-of-the-art tools and infrastructure within VIB, an excellence-based research institute.

Applicants must have a Master's degree in Plant Biotechnology, Plant Physiology, Biology, Molecular Biology, Physiology, or a related discipline, and be fluent in English. Experience with Arabidopsis, plant development, and plant hormone biology is desirable but not required. Candidates should be highly motivated, meticulous, proactive, independent, and self-motivated, with excellent interpersonal communication and time-management skills. Teamwork and responsibility are important, and enthusiasm for joining a dynamic research lab is expected.

The position offers a 4-year PhD contract through Ghent University, a stimulating and supportive international research environment, and various training opportunities to broaden expertise and skills. Applications are welcome until the position is filled. To apply, use the online VIB application tool and submit a detailed CV, a one-page summary of past research activities, a one-page motivation letter, and the names and contact details of two to three referees. Applications by email will not be considered. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interviews.
