About this position

Linköping University invites applications for a PhD student position in Computer Science, with a focus on Automated Security Testing for Critical Infrastructure. This position is part of the CUGS Research School and is a joint effort with Cybercampus Sweden, based at the division for Cybersecurity within the Department of Computer and Information Science. The department is one of the largest in northern Europe, with research spanning core and applied computer sciences, and offers a vibrant academic environment for doctoral studies.

As a PhD student, you will primarily engage in research and doctoral studies, with the possibility of teaching or other departmental duties up to 20% of your time. The research project centers on developing and applying automated security testing methods to protect critical infrastructure, including smart grids and secure software supply chains. The Cybersecurity division is active in national and European projects, focusing on verification, intrusion detection, AI-based cybersecurity, and the analysis of vulnerabilities in isolated systems. The division also operates a cybersecurity lab that pioneers new research methods and provides training for students and professionals.

Applicants must have a master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent, with at least 240 credits (including 60 advanced credits in core computer science). Strong programming skills and a keen interest in software security are essential. Additional merits include research experience (such as a master’s thesis) and familiarity with machine learning, formal methods, or network protocols. Proficiency in English, both spoken and written, is required, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The position is a full-time employment, normally lasting four years, with possible extension up to five years depending on teaching and institutional duties. The initial contract is for one year, renewable for up to two years at a time based on satisfactory progress. The salary is determined according to a locally negotiated progression. Security screening may be required for this position. Linköping University values diversity and equal opportunities for all applicants.

Applications must be submitted via the official Linköping University job portal by April 20, 2026. For more information about the research environment, visit the Cybersecurity research page. For application details and to apply, see the official job posting.
