About this position
A fully funded PhD student position in Molecular and Cellular Biology is available at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) in Strasbourg, France. The research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of defective viral genomes (DVGs) in influenza viruses, aiming to elucidate their formation, packaging, and interaction with the host immune system. This project is highly relevant to global health, as influenza viruses cause millions of severe cases and hundreds of thousands of deaths annually. Understanding DVGs could lead to new antiviral strategies and improved management of influenza infections.
The doctoral project is funded by the ANR-DFG and involves multidisciplinary approaches, including advanced virology, RNA biology, immunology, and bioinformatics. The candidate will use cutting-edge technologies such as Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing and Nano-DMS-MaP for RNA structure mapping. Responsibilities include high-throughput sequencing, bioinformatic analysis of complex datasets, molecular virology experiments, and collaboration with an international partner in Germany, including a 6-month scientific exchange in Münster.
Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in molecular biology, biochemistry, virology, or a related field. Strong knowledge of RNA biology and experience with standard molecular biology techniques (cloning, PCR, RNA extraction) are required. Experience in NGS library preparation and bioinformatics (command-line tools, Python, or R) is highly desirable. Proficiency in English is mandatory for this international collaboration; French is not required but helpful for daily life. The candidate should be precise, organized, and comfortable working with infectious viruses and hazardous substances under appropriate safety protocols.
The position offers a minimum monthly salary of €2300 for 36 months, full-time, with comprehensive safety training and equipment. The work environment is collaborative and innovative, providing opportunities for career development in life sciences. The application deadline is December 24, 2025. Interested candidates should apply via the CNRS job portal, ensuring all eligibility criteria are met and required documents are submitted.
