About this position

The Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) is offering a fully funded PhD student position in the field of Plant Biotechnology, focusing on the genetic improvement of barley through the exploration of Hordeum bulbosum, a wild relative of barley. The research group 'Resources Genetics and Reproduction' is dedicated to unlocking beneficial genes from crop wild relatives (CWR) to enhance the resilience and sustainability of cereal crops, particularly in the context of climate change and emerging biotic and abiotic stresses.

The PhD project aims to characterize and mobilize unique genetic diversity from Hordeum bulbosum, the only non-vulgare species from which stable introgressions into cultivated barley have been achieved. Key research tasks include phenotypic characterization of a global collection of Hordeum bulbosum, development of crossing protocols for hybridization, cytogenetic analysis, and generating and analyzing whole genome sequencing data. The project will also involve the publication and presentation of research results, contributing to the advancement of plant breeding and biotechnology.

Applicants should hold an MSc degree (or equivalent) in biology, biochemistry, crop science, or a related field. Practical experience in molecular biology, especially cytogenetics and PCR, is highly desirable. Basic skills in bioinformatics and/or cytogenetics are advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate problem-solving skills, the ability to conduct independent scientific research, and a passion for working with plants in an interdisciplinary team. Foreign qualifications require an equivalence test in Germany.

The position offers a 3-year contract with a gross salary up to 65% E13 TV-L, starting as early as April 2026. The IPK provides a world-class research environment, family-friendly working conditions, and encourages applications from women and individuals with disabilities. The application deadline is 11 February 2026. For further information, applicants may contact Dr. Anna Backhaus or the IPK HR office.

To apply, submit your online application via the IPK job portal, referencing number 04/01/26. For more details, visit the official IPK website.
