Stockholm University’s Department of Social Anthropology is offering a full-time PhD student position in Social Anthropology, starting September 1, 2026. The department is Sweden’s largest in the field, with a dynamic and internationally renowned faculty. The doctoral program combines advanced coursework (60 credits) and dissertation research (180 credits), providing students with the theoretical and methodological foundation to conduct critical and independent research in social anthropology.

The program is taught in English, and applicants are not required to know Swedish at the time of admission. However, knowledge of Swedish must be acquired within two years for teaching or administrative duties. The position is salaried at 31,600 SEK per month and includes standard Swedish social security benefits such as sickness benefits, rehabilitation allowance, and generous parental-leave insurance. Employment is fixed-term, renewable (initially for one year, then up to two years at a time), and may include up to 20% teaching, research, or administrative duties.

Applicants must hold a master’s degree or equivalent (minimum 240 ECTS, with at least 60 ECTS in the second cycle), and have completed at least 120 ECTS in Social Anthropology or a comparable subject, including a 15 ECTS thesis project. Selection is based on academic rigor, independent judgment, originality in analysis, ability to formulate research questions, work to deadlines, conduct ethnography, and communicate effectively.
