About this position

The Center for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CFT PAS) in Warsaw is offering a fully funded PhD position as a Research Assistant in Quantum Computational Advantage. This opportunity is part of the Center for Quantum-Enabled Computing, a pioneering research unit in Poland dedicated to advancing quantum effects in computing. The project is supported by the Foundation for Polish Science and co-financed by the European Union under the European Funds for Smart Economy 2021-2027 (FENG).

Successful candidates will join the Quantum Computational Advantage group led by Professor Michał Oszmaniec. The group focuses on three main research goals: (i) randomized implementation of quantum operations and circuits to improve performance and reduce hardware requirements for near-term quantum devices; (ii) verification of quantum advantage on realistic hardware, including certification and benchmarking protocols for Boson Sampling and Fermion Sampling on platforms such as superconducting qubits, trapped ions, Rydberg atoms, and photonic processors; and (iii) exploring applications and limitations of quantum advantage schemes, including certified randomness generation, generative machine learning, quantum chemistry, and the potential for dequantizing quantum protocols to inspire improved classical algorithms.

The CFT PAS is a leading research institute in Poland, known for its world-class publications, numerous grants, and participation in international consortia. The institute hosts seminars, workshops, and conferences, and provides educational content through its official YouTube channel. The research environment is creative, innovative, and supportive, with a strong commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion.

The PhD student will be responsible for implementing research tasks using analytical and numerical methods, preparing a PhD thesis based on project results, disseminating findings through scientific articles and conferences, and participating in the scientific life of the institute. Collaboration with top institutes in quantum information theory (such as University of Helsinki, INL in Braga, ICFO in Barcelona) is possible, and funds are available for participation in scientific events and research visits.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics or mathematics. If the degree is not yet awarded, a supervisor’s statement confirming the planned defense date is required. Essential qualifications include a very good command of English, strong knowledge of quantum physics, familiarity with quantum computing and quantum information theory, and advanced mathematical methods of quantum mechanics. Research experience in quantum information and good programming skills are considered assets. Motivation for scientific research and willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team are required.

The position offers a competitive salary of 9,600 PLN/month gross, full social security and health insurance, flexible working hours, access to computational resources, and subsidies for leisure activities, nurseries, and kindergartens. The work arrangement is hybrid, and the position runs until the end of 2029.

To apply, send your application to [email protected] by 15 June 2026, including the reference number MAB/12/2026 in the subject line. Required documents are a CV detailing scientific achievements, transcripts from Bachelor’s and Master’s studies, at least one recommendation letter (sent directly by the recommender), a cover letter explaining motivation, a copy of Master’s diploma (or supervisor’s statement), and a signed Data Privacy Statement. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted and invited for an interview at the Center or online.

For more information, visit project website and institute website.
