The Faculty of Mechanical Science and Engineering, Institute of Aerospace Engineering, Chair of Space Systems, invites applications for a full-time PhD Student (Research Associate) position within the MSCA Doctoral Network SLICE, focusing on the atmospheric impact of emissions from launch vehicle demise.
Project Overview: The research centers on understanding how emissions generated by the ablation and demise of re-entering launch vehicles propagate through the atmosphere, with a particular emphasis on their temporal and spatial distribution and climate impact. The project involves defining suitable interface regions, conducting numerical analyses of emission propagation, performing multiscale simulations of residual expansion in various atmospheric layers, and developing interfaces for climate model data processing. Expected outcomes include the ability to assess the influence of vehicle demise on atmospheric emissions, the development of numerical models for dispersion behavior, and the derivation of parameters for regional atmospheric effect calculations.
Training & Collaboration: The successful candidate will join an international group of over 30 researchers and participate in secondments at the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (Belgium) and Astos Solutions GmbH (Germany), each lasting approximately three months. The SLICE consortium offers a well-structured training program, technical and personal skills development, and opportunities to attend international conferences and outreach activities.
Funding & Benefits: The position is funded under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) regulations, providing a competitive salary with living, mobility, and family allowances (if eligible). Eligibility & Requirements: Applicants must hold (or be close to completing) a MSc or equivalent in aerospace engineering, physics, or a related field. Essential skills include physical and analytical chemistry, computer science (numerical analysis, simulation, modeling, CFD), space engineering, fluid mechanics, and applied physics. Candidates should demonstrate strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork and independent work skills, proactive attitude, and excellent English communication. Knowledge in EcoDesign, climate sciences, life-cycle assessment, and project management is desirable. Applicants must be eligible for PhD enrollment at TU Dresden and comply with the MSCA Mobility Rule (not residing in Germany for more than 12 months in the past 36 months) and must not already hold a doctoral degree.

Strong problem-solving skills, adherence to strict deadlines, proactive attitude, and excellent communication skills in English are essential.
