About this position

The Department of Nephrology at University Hospital Münster (UKM) is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join a cutting-edge research project focused on cell polarity as a determinant of podocyte integrity. This project addresses a critical global health issue, as over 100 million people worldwide suffer from kidney diseases, often characterized by proteinuria due to damage in podocytes and the slit diaphragm (SD) of the glomerular filtration barrier (GFB). The research aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which Crb2 and its binding partners (such as Pals1, Patj, and FERM proteins like EPB41L5) regulate SD-GBM crosstalk and the actomyosin cytoskeleton in podocyte foot processes, and how disruptions in these pathways contribute to proteinuric disease.

The project utilizes a comprehensive array of state-of-the-art techniques, including genetically modified mouse models, hiPSC-derived kidney organoids, immortalized podocyte and MDCK cell lines, as well as advanced molecular methods such as transcriptomics and proteomics. High-resolution microscopy and in vivo models are integral to the research. The position is closely associated with the transregional collaborative research initiative PodoSigN (TRR422), which investigates podocyte function and signaling in health and disease, and offers integration into its structured research training group (IRTG) for doctoral candidates.

Applicants should possess an M.Sc. in biosciences, biotechnology, biochemistry, or biomedicine, with a strong background in molecular and cell biology. Experience with cell cultures, in vivo models, or confocal microscopy is desirable. Candidates must be independent, structured, goal-oriented, and highly motivated, with excellent teamwork and communication skills in English. This is a practical laboratory position; applicants with only (bio-)informatics backgrounds will not be considered. Full measles vaccination is required by law.
