PhD Studentship: Endogenous Lying in Economic Environments University of Essex in United Kingdom

This fully funded PhD studentship at the University of Essex invites applications from ambitious doctoral researchers interested in the dynamics of dishonesty and incentives in economic environments. The project, part of a UKRI Frontier Research initiative, explores how and why individuals misreport information, the evolution of incentives to lie, and the impact of monitoring and enforcement on behaviour. The research is grounded in core areas of economic theory, including contract theory, mechanism design, and dynamic games such as inspection games, providing powerful tools to understand and design incentives for truthful behaviour.

As a PhD student, you will conduct original, high-quality research aligned with the project, working under the supervision of Professor Daniel Garrett. You will contribute to theoretical advances and have scope to engage with behavioural and experimental perspectives. The first year includes advanced PhD training in economics, ensuring a strong foundation for your research.

Funding for this position includes a full tuition fee waiver for both UK and international students, and a tax-free UKRI stipend of £21,805 for 2026–27, guaranteed for three years. The start date is October 2026.

Applicants should have a strong academic background in economics and mathematics, with training in relevant areas such as contract theory, mechanism design, or dynamic games. Evidence of research potential, excellent written and spoken English, and a clear interest in the project topic are required. A merit-level MRes in Economics, or equivalent, is typically required.
