About this position

[Full academic fees plus a tax-free maintenance grant at the UKRI rate (£21,805 per year) for 3.5 years.]

This PhD studentship at the University of Leeds offers an exciting opportunity to advance research in image guided intervention supported with mixed reality. The project aims to develop innovative artificial intelligence solutions for image registration, anatomy segmentation, and immersive technology, with a strong focus on medical imaging and surgical care. The successful candidate will work with preoperative MRI and CT scans to create 3D models of organs, as well as intra-operative surgical videos, contributing to the development of surgical planning tools and the integration of VR/AR assistive platforms.

Research directions will be tailored based on progress and consultation with clinical colleagues and supervisors, ensuring impactful and relevant outcomes. The student will collaborate with computational scientists and surgeons, exploring novel approaches to transform both research and practice in surgical care. The project is supervised by Dr Sharib Ali (lead), Dr Rafael Kuffner dos Anjos (co-supervisor), and Dr Shahid Farid (clinical, external), providing a multidisciplinary environment for academic growth.

The studentship is funded by the School of Computer Science, covering full academic fees and a tax-free maintenance grant at the UKRI rate (£21,805 per year) for 3.5 years. The position is open to both UK and international applicants. Ideal candidates will have a first class or upper second class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, with prior knowledge in deep learning and computer graphics highly desirable.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the main supervisor informally with their CV and a short list of interests for discussion. The application deadline is 30 April 2026. For further details and to apply, visit the University of Leeds project page.
