About this position

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) invites applications for a full-time PhD studentship in Statistics, based at the Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus. VUB is a leading Dutch-speaking university in Brussels, renowned for its commitment to freedom, equality, and diversity, and is a member of the EUTOPIA European university alliance. The university offers a vibrant, international environment with over 4,000 staff and a strong ethos of open, creative research.

This position is hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences and Solvay Business School, within the Applied Economics department. The successful candidate will prepare a doctoral thesis in Statistics, while also contributing to teaching and student supervision. Responsibilities include leading exercise sessions for 'Statistics for Business & Economics I' (Bachelor in Business Economics) and 'Statistiek voor Bedrijfskunde' (Business Administration bridging programme), as well as supervising student groups for courses such as 'Research Methods in Economics and Management', 'Bachelor Thesis', and 'Bachelor Paper'. The main supervisor is Prof. Dr. Ellen Van Droogenbroeck, with Prof. Dr. Leo Van Hove (department chair) available for contact.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Business Engineering, (Applied) Economic Sciences, International Business, Sociology, Mathematics, or an equivalent qualification. Prior paid assistantship at a university must not exceed 12 months. Non-EU/EEA candidates must meet legal residence and permit requirements for VUB. The position offers a 12-month contract, extendable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation, with a stipend determined by government salary scales. Additional benefits include telework or internet allowance, hospitalisation insurance, reimbursement for public transport or cycling, campus restaurant discounts, sports and shopping benefits, childcare, and an extensive leave policy.

To apply, submit your motivation letter, CV, and diplomas (not required for VUB alumni) via the online portal at jobs.vub.be by 22 June 2026. The selection process consists of dossier review and a job interview. For further information, contact Prof. Leo Van Hove at [email protected]. Explore more about VUB and its campuses, benefits, and strategic goals at jobs.vub.be, and learn about the EUTOPIA network at eutopia-university.eu.

This opportunity is ideal for candidates interested in advanced statistical research, teaching, and contributing to a dynamic academic community in Brussels. The position offers excellent career development prospects, a supportive work environment, and a range of employee benefits.
