This PhD studentship at Imperial College London offers an exciting opportunity to conduct research in the field of sustainable grease lubrication. Supported by a bursary and fees at the UK student rate through the EPSRC/Shell IDLA award, the project aims to address environmental concerns associated with lithium-based grease thickeners by developing sustainable alternatives using novel materials and recycled plastics. The research will employ advanced characterisation techniques to gain fundamental insights into the working mechanisms of these thickeners, with the goal of designing sustainable greases that match or surpass the performance of conventional lithium-based products.

The project is hosted by the renowned Tribology Group at Imperial College London, which comprises a multicultural and multidisciplinary team of around 60 researchers. Collaboration with industry partners and other universities is integral to the research, providing a dynamic and applied context for the work. The group is recognized for its expertise in tribology, lubrication, and materials science, making it an ideal environment for students interested in mechanical and chemical engineering, as well as sustainability and environmental impact.

Applicants should hold a 2:1 honours degree or above in chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related subject.
