This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia focuses on developing realistic computer vision algorithms, particularly for scenes affected by haze, strong directional light, and underwater signal degradation. The project aims to improve the realism of outputs generated by machine learning and generative AI solutions, addressing the gap between algorithmic results and actual scene appearance. Research topics include relighting images, haze removal, and underwater image processing, combining AI with classical methods to enforce realism.

The successful candidate will join the Colour & Imaging Lab (C&IL), a vibrant research group comprising 10 PhDs and postdocs, and will collaborate with the Computer Vision Center at Universite Autonoma Barcelona, including a 3-month research visit. The lab maintains strong industry links with companies such as Apple, ARM, Google, Hewlett Packard, and Meta, offering opportunities for internships and future employment. Funding for this studentship includes Home tuition fees, a tax-free maintenance stipend (£20,408 for 2026/27) for up to 3 years, and £2,000 per annum for research training activities. Applications are open to both UK and international candidates, but funding covers tuition fees at the UK Home rate only; international applicants must pay the difference between Home and International tuition fees. Entry requirements are a minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree or a Masters degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, psychology (psychophysics), or allied numerate disciplines.
