About this position
This PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham focuses on the detection and quantification of turbulence in blood flow using advanced 4D Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) techniques. Flow disturbances in blood are key indicators of cardiovascular diseases, often resulting from abnormal heart movement or arterial blockages. Traditional Doppler ultrasound methods can be unreliable for complex cases, making 4D MRI a promising alternative for visualising and analysing unsteady flow patterns deep within the human body, particularly in conditions such as valvular heart disease and atherosclerosis.
The project aims to address two main challenges in clinical use of 4D MRI: the long scanning times and the inaccuracy of turbulence measurements. Research will be conducted using a vascular flow phantom, with MRI scanning strategies developed to improve turbulence detection and quantification. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) will be used to measure flow turbulence and velocity in the phantom, providing a calibration benchmark for MRI data. Additionally, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques will be developed to further inform new MRI scanning strategies.
The interdisciplinary supervision team includes Professor Kwing-So Choi, an expert in fluid mechanics and turbulence control, and Professor Penny Gowland, a leading academic in MRI research for biomedical applications. The project is based at the Sir Peter Mansfield Imaging Centre, a renowned international hub for medical imaging research, particularly MRI.
Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a 1st class degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or applied mathematics, preferably at master's level. A 2:1 degree may be considered for candidates with relevant research experience. The position is open to UK and international candidates. This is a self-funded PhD opportunity, so applicants must secure their own funding, either privately or through external/government sources. Chinese students are encouraged to apply in partnership with the China Scholarship Council.
