About this position

SRON - Space Research Organization Netherlands is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist for a position in atmospheric science, focusing on the interpretation of satellite observations to monitor and understand methane emissions from solid waste disposal sites worldwide. SRON is a leading institute in the Netherlands for space research, specializing in Earth observation satellite instruments for climate and air quality studies. The successful candidate will join the Earth Science Group (ESG), a multidisciplinary team of approximately 40 scientists working on satellite data processing, interpretation, and instrumentation development.

The postdoc will contribute to the TWOS (Targeting Waste emissions Observed from Space) project, collaborating with GHGSat and the Global Methane Hub to measure methane emissions from waste sites in the Global South. Research activities include plume detection, emission quantification, and data interpretation using atmospheric modeling, as well as evaluating urban and national-scale emissions with TROPOMI satellite data and inverse modeling. The project supports local mitigation activities and involves engagement with NGOs and local partners.

SRON's research addresses topics of societal relevance, with methane emissions being a major contributor to global warming. The institute is involved in international collaborations with organizations such as the UN, ECMWF CAMS, World Bank, and UNEP’s IMEO-MARS, aiming to turn scientific data into actionable emission reductions. The postdoc will complement ongoing research on methane super-emitters and contribute to projects with global impact.

The position is full-time for two years, with the possibility of a two-year extension, and offers a competitive salary up to €5,758 gross per month (NWO scale 10). Additional benefits include an end-of-year bonus, holiday allowance, generous vacation leave, pension scheme, parental leave, training opportunities, and flexible/hybrid working arrangements. SRON is based in Leiden and Groningen and maintains strong partnerships with ESA, NASA, JAXA, Dutch universities, and other research institutes.

Applicants must hold a PhD in atmospheric sciences or a related field, possess experience in interpreting atmospheric observations, and demonstrate strong programming and data analytics skills. Experience with atmospheric methane research, transport modeling, and/or flux inversions is advantageous. Excellent English communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively are required.

Interested candidates should apply online via the SRON application portal, submitting a CV and cover letter. For further information, applicants may contact SRON HR. This is an excellent opportunity to join a world-leading institute and contribute to impactful environmental research.
