About this position

Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a postdoctoral position in the Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures. The focus of this role is on simulations of thin film growth, specifically within atomic layer deposition (ALD) reactors. The research is funded by InnoSuisse and the Swiss National Science Foundation, ensuring a robust and well-supported environment for scientific advancement.

The successful candidate will engage in both applied and fundamental research projects, utilizing finite element methods, Monte Carlo simulation approaches, and continuum modelling to study precursor transport, heat distribution, nucleation, and growth of thin films. A key aspect of the position involves verifying simulation results against experimental findings, fostering a strong connection between computational and experimental research. The candidate is expected to publish their research in high-level, peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Computational Science, or a closely related discipline. Experience with ALD and simulation techniques is highly desirable. The role requires excellent motivation and the ability to collaborate closely with industry partners, experimentalists, and an international, multidisciplinary research team. Proficiency in English (oral and written) is mandatory, while knowledge of German or French is considered an advantage.

Empa offers an ideal working environment in Thun, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including cleanrooms, advanced materials analysis tools, ALD/MLD/PVD infrastructure, and computational resources. The city is located in a scenic area near the mountains, providing a pleasant living and working atmosphere. The appointment is for one year, with the possibility of extension up to five years, starting from August 2026 or as mutually agreed.

Empa values inclusion and respect, welcoming candidates interested in innovative, sustainable, and meaningful research activities. To apply, candidates should submit a complete online application via the Empa job portal, including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons. Applications submitted by email or post will not be considered.
