About this position

The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, is a world-leading international research centre renowned for its advanced particle accelerator and intense X-ray beams. The facility supports thousands of scientists annually in diverse fields, including biology, medicine, environmental sciences, cultural heritage, materials science, and physics. ESRF is supported by 19 countries and is committed to diversity and equal opportunity.

This postdoctoral position is based on the ID22 high resolution powder diffraction beamline, which enables atomic-level studies of materials, both crystalline and amorphous, often under varying conditions such as temperature and atmosphere. As a post-doc, you will join the ID22 team, contributing to the operation and development of the beamline. Responsibilities include acting as a local contact, assisting visiting users in designing, planning, setting up, and conducting experiments, and developing your own scientific programme using the powder diffraction beamline and other ESRF instruments.

Applicants must hold a PhD in chemistry, physics, materials science, mineralogy, or a related field, obtained within the last three years. Desirable qualifications include experience with powder diffraction or other crystallographic techniques, familiarity with synchrotron radiation instrumentation, proficiency in diffraction data analysis and computing, and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary staff and facility users. English proficiency is required, as it is the working language at ESRF.

The contract is for 18 months, with the possibility of renewal for an additional 6 to 18 months. ESRF offers a competitive compensation and allowances package, including financial support for relocation to Grenoble. The institute provides a vibrant international environment, opportunities to collaborate with global experts, and a workplace designed to support quality of life. ESRF encourages applications from disabled persons and values diversity in its workforce.

For further information, contact Dr. Andy Fitch ([email protected]) or Dr. Catherine Dejoie ([email protected]). Details on employment terms and conditions can be found at ESRF Jobs.
