About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a Post-doctoral Assistant position within the ERC project “Copying as Common Practice in Early Modern Architecture” (CCPEMA). The successful candidate will join the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, working under the supervision of Professor Elizabeth Merrill. This 12-month contract offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research on Francesco di Giorgio’s illustrated theory and the broader context of early modern architectural practices.

The role involves conducting archival research abroad, shaping the project’s direction, co-authoring scientific articles, and disseminating research findings at international seminars and conferences. The candidate will also support other activities within the ERC project and the department. The position is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, with a full-time occupancy rate and remuneration according to salary scale PD1 to PD4. Ghent University provides a comprehensive benefits package, including training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Architecture (architect and/or architect-engineer), Architectural History, or Art History. Essential qualifications include proficiency in reading Italian (including early modern vernacular sources), strong academic English writing skills, advanced knowledge of fifteenth-century Italian architectural theory, and experience with archival research and textual analysis. Candidates should demonstrate excellent academic results or distinguished achievement, supported by peer-reviewed journal articles or a book publication.

To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 4 May 2026. Required documents include a CV and academic transcript (merged PDF), cover letter (PDF), diploma transcript (with translation if not in Dutch, French, German, or English), and a sample publication or finished piece of writing (published in English). Late or email applications will not be accepted. For further information, contact Professor Elizabeth Merrill at [email protected]. Questions regarding the application process can be directed to [email protected].

This position is ideal for scholars with a strong background in early modern architecture, art history, and archival research, seeking to advance their academic career in a vibrant international research environment.
