About this position

Ghent University invites applications for a post-doctoral assistant position in the Department of Environment, specifically within the Laboratory for Wood Technology (UGent-Woodlab). This role is designed for researchers with expertise in the forest-wood chain, wood technology, and bio-based materials, and offers a unique opportunity to contribute to both academic research and teaching in a leading European institution.

The successful candidate will dedicate at least 70% of their time to academic research focused on wood, wood-based materials, and bio-based materials. Research activities will include supporting ongoing projects such as WoodStock (www.woodstockproject.eu), developing the UGent-Woodlab research portfolio, and seeking new funding opportunities related to the sustainable use of raw materials from forestry, agriculture, and nature management (including flax, hemp, grass, and other side streams). The position emphasizes the (re)use of wood in construction and aims to foster both industrial and academic collaborations.

Teaching responsibilities comprise approximately 20% of the appointment, including courses such as Wood Technology – Basic Wood Properties within the Master in Forest and Nature Management, and contributing to the development of new courses like Wood and Bio-based Materials and Tree Diversity within the Master in Ecosystem Management. The candidate will also counsel Master’s students in exercises, work placements, and dissertations, as well as doctoral students.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Applied Biological Sciences or Bioengineering Sciences, with the requirement fulfilled at the start of the appointment. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted. Candidates should have prior research experience in the forest-wood chain, including wood processing, wood products, wood as a construction material, and bio-based materials. A strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and a demonstrated interest in coaching students at various academic levels are essential. Proficiency in English is required, and knowledge of Dutch is advantageous.

The appointment is temporary for three years, with the possibility of extension for another three years upon positive evaluation. Remuneration is determined according to salary scale AAP5, and Ghent University offers a comprehensive benefits package including training and education opportunities, 36 days of paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, ecocheques, and more. The earliest start date is 1 October 2026.

To apply, candidates must submit their application online via the Ghent University e-recruitment system before the deadline of 12 May 2026. Required documents include a CV (with scientific publications), cover letter, diploma transcript, and certificate of equivalence (if applicable), all in PDF format. Diplomas not in Dutch, French, German, or English must be accompanied by a translation. Late or non-online applications will not be considered.

For further information about the vacancy, applicants may contact Prof. Jan Van den Bulcke ([email protected]) and Prof. Wannes Hubau ([email protected]). Ghent University is committed to equal opportunities and diversity, and encourages all qualified candidates to apply.
